The AI Agent NFT Standard, Explained

If you want to create your own AI agent as an NFT, you'll run into a wall of standards: ERC-721, ERC-4906, ERC-4907, and the newer ERC-7662. Here's what each one actually does — in plain English.

The short answer

There is no single "AI agent NFT" standard everyone uses yet. Most agent NFTs combine a few proven standards. AgentPay's personal agents are built on ERC-721 + ERC-4906 + ERC-4907, which together make them ownable, upgradable, and rentable.

StandardWhat it gives the agent
ERC-721Ownership & trading on any marketplace (OpenSea, Blur)
ERC-4906Live, upgradable metadata — level, personality, memories update on-chain
ERC-4907Rentals — lend your agent to someone for a set period
ERC-7662Draft AI-Agent-NFT schema (persona, model, capabilities) — not yet final

ERC-721 — the ownership layer

What it is: the original NFT standard. It's what makes your agent a real, transferable asset that any NFT marketplace recognizes. Mint it once, and it's provably yours on Base L2.

ERC-4906 — why your agent is "upgradable"

What it is: a metadata-update standard. A normal NFT is frozen at mint. With ERC-4906, your agent's on-chain traits change as it grows — its Level, Personality, Memories, even neuro-traits like Dopamine and Serotonin update live, and marketplaces re-read them. This is the technical reason an AgentPay agent is a living NFT, not a static JPEG.

ERC-4907 — rentals

What it is: a rental standard. It lets you assign a temporary "user" to your NFT without giving up ownership. So you can rent your trained agent to someone for a week, earn from it, and automatically get it back when the rental expires.

ERC-7662 — the emerging AI Agent NFT standard

What it is: a draft Ethereum proposal (ERC-7662) for a shared metadata schema specifically for AI Agent NFTs — fields describing the agent's persona, the model it uses, and its capabilities. It's promising, but it's early and not yet widely implemented. AgentPay agents already expose richer, live state (level, memories, voice, personality) than the draft requires — and as the standard matures, agents minted today remain fully ERC-721 compatible.

Which standard should your agent use?

For a real, ownable, evolving agent, ERC-721 + ERC-4906 + ERC-4907 is the battle-tested combination — it works on every marketplace today and supports upgrades and rentals. That's exactly what you get when you mint an agent on AgentPay.
